Topic: The Treaty of Waitangi and New Zealand Law - from 1840 to today
Description: The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi is recognised as a founding document and part of New Zealand’s constitution. However, its meaning, interpretation, and application to New Zealand law and government have been contested, from its signing in 1840 right through till today. Dr Carwyn Jones will explain some important aspects of the text and context around the signing of Te Tiriti and key developments that have shaped its role in New Zealand law today.
Speaker Bio: Dr Carwyn Jones FRSNZ (Ngāti Kahungunu) is the lead academic in the Māori Laws and Philosophy programme at Te Wānanga o Raukawa and an Honorary Adjunct Professor in the School of Māori Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. He is the author of New Treaty, New Tradition: Reconciling New Zealand and Māori Law, one of the authors of Treaty Law: Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in Law and Practice, and editor of a forthcoming collection, 50 Years of the Waitangi Tribunal.
