Sunday Online Seminars

Speaker: Dr Simon McCallum
7th September 2025, 12 noon NZST

Topic: AGI, ASI, and the role of humans

Description: This talk will discuss how LLMs have unlocked the operating system of humanity. AI's that can manipulate language effectively, can use language to plan, and have effective tool use, have become the norm. Where are we heading in an environment with intelligences that both complement and exceed our own abilities?

What is the role of education, knowledge and wisdom is a world where our traditional proxies for filtering information have been corrupted?

With 30 years of working in Neural Networks, and 25 years teaching, I will discuss some of the challenges we are facing, and then lead a discussion about what we can do to hopefully end in the utopian rather than dystopian scenarios.

Speaker Bio: Dr Simon McCallum did his PhD in Neural Networks working on modelling the epistemic memory and the function of the hippocampus and neocortex in memory formation. His recent teaching has focused on Game Development as it brings together both creative and technical challenges. He has been active in writing policy for government and education within New Zealand. He lectures at Victoria University of Wellington, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
